The Magivore

The Magivore is our first bestiary entry!

This apex predator is a sapient creature that emerged from the third world, and now feeds on magical power sources.  The greater portion of its body resembles a large mountain cat but nearly the size of a horse, ending in a brilliant red and black mane.  There are two limbs at the base of its neck holding up round, reflective disc like a mirror. It has the innate ability to sense magic and will try to consume arcane power sources, by touching them to the magivore’s mirror, which absorbs all the spiritual energy therein. Little is known about how it perceives the world through traditional senses, since it exhibits no sensory organs.  Magivores are ferocious and intelligent, capable of stalking prey for several days and using the environment to their advantage. Due to their magical nature, they are able to climb any vertical surface as if it were a flat floor, defying gravity as they hunt. They are powerful, relentless, and a source of fear for anything that draws their attention.

In Conflict: The Magivore is a cunning predator, looking for the best opportunity to strike.  It will try to absorb magic attacks into its mirror, occasionally releasing an absorbed spell as a subsequent attack. Its main attacks will be raking targets with its claws, but it is capable of unleashing magical blasts from its previously absorbed magic spells.

Stunts:

Spectral Sense – Can use Magic to detect magic artifacts, arcane power sources or magical life forms. The magivore has a permanent +2 boost to any roll to detect magic.

Mirror Mirror – If the magivore wins any combat roll against a magic attack, it absorbs the magic cast against it or drains power from the magical weapon used against it. Magic attacks absorbed this way may be regurgitated later.

Regurgitate – The Magivore releases a spell from a previous encounter. Any unique effect like this can only happen once per encounter, and should end after one or two rounds.

1 Fireball – roll a magic attack at one target with a +2 boost

2 Bees – Release a swarm of red and green bees, hindering movement and communication with a -2 shift

3 Stormcast– Torrential rain falls around the environment, rapidly filling any enclosed space. 

4 Foul wind – All other organic targets in their must make an opposed physique roll to resist a disease

5 Blinding light – the two closest targets must make an opposed will check to avoid taking a Blind aspect

6 Petrify – One target must make an opposed magic check or one of their limbs is turned to stone.

7 Chain lightning – all other targets must roll athletics to dodge bolts of lightning at DC 4, otherwise taking 3 stress

8 Anti-Gravity – gravity ceases in an immediate vicinity, up to a fifty foot radius

Story Uses

A land baron has been terrorizing labor organizers by casting several curses and summoning monsters through ritual magic. They’ve disposed of the evidence by feeding all of it to a magivore, but now creature has grown to terrible size and strength before shattering its containment and running amok.

A bridge is being erected across a gulch for the railroad, but the construction site is frequently wrecked overnight.  Apparently a foreman tried to take shortcuts using magical tools, which have now attracted the attention of a Magivore.
